Welthungerhilfe is an International NGO headquartered in Germany with operations in 41 countries . In Zimbabwe the programmes strategic thrust focuses on Agriculture and WASH. Welthungerhilfe regional strategy for Southern Africa on Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security focuses on improving farmers productivity and welfare through strengthening pluralistic extension systems; linking farmers to commercial input and output markets; facilitating access to finance including through community based micro finance as well as formal institutions; and through promoting improved production of nutritious food and the uptake of good health and hygiene practices . In Zimbabwe Welthungerhilfe Supports 59 000 farming households in Gokwe South Shurugwi and Kwekwe who are funded under two programmes, the DFID funded Livelihoods and Food Security Programme titled Extension and Training for Rural Agriculture (EXTRA) and the EU funded Sustainable Intensification of Market Based Agriculture (SIMBA), in both programmes Welthungerhilfe is the Consortia Lead. Our current successes include the facilitation of contract farming with Better Agriculture and through this the production and marketing of birds eye chili on the export market. A number of these farmers have realized profits of over $1000 from this venture. Other commodities in which we have facilitated successful engagement of smallholder farmers include the sesame value chain and the mung bean value chain for export as well as quality protein maize which is being explored for the local market. Through membership in the Market Linkage Association Welthungerhilfe seeks to engage new market players who can further our mission. We also seek to share results of our work with various stakeholders in order to influence Agriculture Policy for the increased inclusion of smallholder farmers in commercially oriented farming.
